And There Was Only One Bed

“Home again. Home again. Jiggity-jig,” I issued quietly, grinning up at the banner on full display across the top of the convention center.

We were home.

I sighed loudly and laid my head on Mason’s shoulder as he chuckled low in my ear and wrapped his arm around my shoulders. That ridiculously sexy sound was starting to become my new favorite thing in the entire world, and I didn’t care who knew it anymore.

We’d been out of the game for three long weeks. No conventions, no cosplay, and basically no fun. Just homework and hiding. My two least favorite things about high school. Sure, it was fine after class when we all hung out and watched movies, which was basically all we did at these things too, but these were our people, and I could tell Parker had already unclenched. The genuine smile on their face had returned the minute we hit the highway, but I still couldn’t tell if it was because we were here or because they were here with Max.

This particular appearance for Parker had been in the works for literal months. That was well before either of us had found our respective soulmates, obviously, but somehow we had weaseled our way into getting to spend the whole weekend together with both of them. Sans parents. Sans babysitters. We were flying high.

Well, not completely sans babysitters. Marcus, Mason’s older brother, had been required to join us, but it was better than nothing. And I was pretty sure he wasn’t going to be in any shape to actually pay attention to us this weekend anyway. Especially not with the way he was gawking at everyone walking past.

“Cosplay is not consent,” Mason warned his brother.

“Huh?” he asked, his mouth still hanging open.

“Dude,” Mason said with another chuckle, playfully hitting his brother in the stomach. “Just because these girls are walking around like that doesn’t mean you can stare like a creeper. Okay?”

“I’m not a creeper,” Marcus responded, rubbing his stomach. “I’ll be good. I know the rules. You four are the ones with your teenage hormones calling the shots. Not me.”

“Right. Okay,” Mason said, rolling his eyes.

“Besides, all I really care about is Artist Alley anyway,” Marcus protested. “If someone would kindly point me in that direction.”

“We have to get checked in first,” Max said, pointing toward the doors in front of us. “If we stand out here much longer, someone’s gonna recognize Parker and then all hell will break loose.”

“Oh, right. Super famous cosplayer. Got it,” Marcus said, nodding as he picked up his luggage from the sidewalk. “Let’s do this, kids.”

Max giggled and copied Mason’s earlier movement as she kissed Parker’s temple and they both sauntered in ahead of us.

“If you two are going to be cute the whole weekend, I will perish before we get back,” Mason said.

“I’ll write you a good eulogy,” Max promised, barely turning around to reply. “It’ll be epic. I swear.”

“Gee. Thanks, dear.”

Parker shook their head, as they always did, at Max and Mason’s antics as we all followed Marcus to the front desk.
